. And now, here's Emily.
Berets are one of things I admire on others but have yet to partake in myself — on the right person, they're incredibly chic, but I'm scared of looking like some kind of bad French-person parody. I was re-inspired to give them a try after seeing this Hutchinson style on Rugby.com, so I went to Lucky's accessories editor and resident beret expert, Melissa Lum, who wears them day-in, day-out when it's chilly. Turns out there are two basic ways to pull them off, and Melissa not only gave me some great styling tips, but very kindly obliged when I begged her to let me photograph her for this post (thanks again, Melissa!).
Look 1 (Left): Slouchy Boho
Center the hat and push it back onto the crown of your head. Paradoxically, if it's too tight, it'll slip off easier, so it's better to size up than size down. With both looks, you won't need to use bobby pins if the fit is right in the first place. Don't tuck your hair behind your ears, or the look becomes too Girl Scout-ish.
Look 2 (Right): Parisian Glamour
Cocked to the side like this, the vibe is very Gallic-in-a-good-way. Cover the part in your hair for a cleaner look. If you have bangs, sweep them off to the same side as the hat. With a beret that has seams (as this one does), it looks best with a little volume, so be sure not to flatten it out too much on your head.
