Match Rugby Grants For Teach For America: Help Us Choose The Recipients
Social Action
TeachForAmerica

Rugby gives a big “THX” to all of you out there who purchased Match Rugby shirts. The Match Fund has been so successful that we are able to make our first donations — and we want you to be a part of the process. In a collaboration with Teach For America, we’ve selected five organizations created by Teach For America alumni: The Generation Project, Girl Talk, Youth Organizing Urban Revitalization Systems, Transform America and Tipping Points Test Prep. The Match Rugby team will select one of these organizations to receive a $25,000 grant and a runner-up, who will receive a $15,000 grant. The Ralph Lauren Foundation will weigh voting on this page as one part of the process of choosing the two winners of the Match Rugby grants. After the jump, learn more about each of the finalists and place your vote as to which organization you’d like to see win the cash. Cause you always look good when you give back.

The Generation Project:
Jessica Rauch (New York City Corps ’05) and Eli Savit (New York City Corps ’05) are redefining educational philanthropy by launching The Generation Project, an online community that engages young philanthropists in expanding co- and extra-curricular enrichment opportunities for low-income students. Donors design gifts based on their interests and experiences and post their ideas online; students, teachers, and administrators search and apply for the gifts. The Generation Project transparently facilitates, administers and tracks these relationships, allowing for a personal relationship between the donor and the school. Unlike traditional charities that leave donors unsure of how their money is used, The Generation Project attracts donors who desire a more hands-on involvement in social change.

Girl Talk:

Elizabeth Devlin (Eastern North Carolina Corps ’04) is launching Girl Talk, a network of after-school book clubs for at-risk adolescent girls in grades 6 through 12. Unlike traditional book clubs, Girl Talk is designed to empower young women, through the discussion of literature, to become self-assured leaders in their communities while also increasing their reading achievement and ability to think critically about the written and spoken word. Girl Talk is unique in that it addresses both the academic and personal development of adolescent girls. The book clubs will employ literature with strong female characters in conjunction with structured discussions around identity, aspirations and career planning. Creating this safe and and enjoyable community will reframe reading as a fun activity, not just a chore.

Youth Organizing Urban Revitalization Systems (YOURS):
Started by Najib Jammal (Baltimore Corps ’03), YOURS is a three-part model of education, entrepreneurship and community revitalization that builds a system in which youth can become leaders of their community. YOURS offers an entrepreneurship program that helps students launch, develop and manage cooperative businesses and an advocacy and civic engagement program, which uses college volunteers to train Baltimore area youth to form debate teams, community service programs and school-based programs. YOURS’s first initiative is a cooperative clothing store that sells T-shirts, jewelry, music and art work produced by youth. The store is managed entirely by youth members of YOURS, and YOURS uses the proceeds from every sale to support educational and entrepreneurial programming.

Transform America:
Through Transform America, Chester Asher (New York City Corps ’03) aims to empower youth to make significant change in their communities by getting them more engaged in advocacy and policy. Transform America’s approach is to create Youth Councils throughout New York City, made up of a group of middle and high school students who meet to identify issues of importance and directly affect change in their communities. Youth Councils are run out of city council members’ offices, enabling participants to witness the way political change is made. Youth Councils conduct research about issues that affect their communities and draft policy recommendations. These recommendations are made to the city council as well as to school administrations, providing a direct youth voice and allowing youth to have influence in decisions that affect their lives and communities.

Tipping Points Test Prep
Greg Lowe (Greater Philadelphia-Camden Corps ’05) is the founder of Tipping Points Test Prep, an organization that provides high-quality, low-cost tutoring and test preparation services to at-risk, underprivileged youth to help them access college and higher education opportunities. Compared to for-profit models like Kaplan, Greg’s approach will only charge $50 per student for a 12-week tutoring course, but still attract high-quality tutors by paying them at the same rate as Tipping Points’ for-profit competitors. By helping erase part of the resource gap between low-income youth and their more affluent peers, Tipping Points hopes to play a role in closing the achievement gap.

Which organization would you like to see get the $25,000 Rugby Match Grant?

I know the voting is closed but I just wanted to express my satisfaction as a Generation Project donor. My gift was an essay contest for which the winners will receive a monetary prize for 7th and 8th graders attending a middle school in inner city Detroit a part of the country that is in desperate need of all types of assistance especially education. Once I informed the Generation Project what my goal was they were able to coordinate and arrange everything for me.

I am a student at a science highschool in Brooklyn and it is very hard for us to get any kind of platform or even recognition or opportunity to be heard for different issues that we are concerned about in our school and community. Even many adults that claim to be youth advocates and be committed to young people just want to talk the talk but not actual hear young people let alone directly involve the ones for which they are making decisions!! Transform America and transform education.

The Generation Project! What could be more important than transparency in a charity right now? We have Madoff bilking nonprofits out of money charities losing endowments in the stock market. The Generation Project is a simple direct clean and efficient charity which is exactly what we need right now.

Honestly right now is the perfect platform for Transform America’s suggestion though. Now is the perfect time to get youth involved. And it is very relevant to have young people involved in youth councils regardless of an immediate measurable result. HELLO? they’ll be voting citizens - INFORMED voting citizens- in less than a few years. Also are they not our future and us theirs??

Ying Liu left a comment on 3/29/2009 at 7:26 PM:
You know all of the finalist appear to be deserving of support but if I had one vote that would go to Tipping Points as I really thing that our system of determining who goes to college isn’t totally fair and Tipping Points is trying so hard to lend help to deserving kids who may be smart but just need some guidance to show them how to take the SAT or ACT tests. I really really really hope that the board recognizes the significance of the community service that TIPPING POINTS is providing.

Question for Transform America - how can we expect dialogue with a youth council to possibly have an effect on new york politicians knowing that new york is the oldest and most special interested political machine at on a city level? the resources and relationships of lobbyists and community leaders will override any input from student interns unless there’s first some kind of legislative reform that puts the youth council on an equal footing and that would take years and specia

I am a teacher and the conditions that some schools students and teachers are trying to work with are simply shameful and deplorable. There is nothing more important to the future of this country than our children’s education. Nothing. I applaud The Generation Project especially now in this horrific economy to reach out for the very basic needs of educational communities. All of the projects entered are wonderful but The Generation Project addresses the heart and soul of every community
The Gen Project works! left a comment on 3/27/2009 at 2:07 PM:
while there may be other online giving communities none of these communities are in any way similar to The Generation Project. As far as I can gather their vision of letting donors create gifts is completely unique. What they have done already with very limited resources is VERY encouraging and has shown that by letting donors have complete creative control over what they give people are more inclined to donate and are more willing to invest in education. www.thegenerationproject.org

Transform America sounds like a fantastic way to empower youth by giving them a direct voice and experience in poilitical processes. Those involved in these councils at a young age are more inclined to be encouraged rather then intimidated or disillusioned by the democratic system. By showing people that they can become activiely involved in voicing issues and directly instigating their change you are effectively creating future leaders. Invest this grant into a cause that can only grow.

I vote for Girl Talk. This program is already working effectively in Maryland and offers a realistic and engaging approach to bringing at-risk girls closer to reading and education. Girls who read are more likely to stay in school become more effective writers and eventually become mothers who model this important learning activity to their children. Teach a young woman to value reading and it could have an impact on generations.

So here’s the deal Generation Project has the most original well-implemented project out there. It is going to make a huge difference in a lot of young peoples’ lives and it will also personally connect the donors to the act of giving in a way that very few organizations are able to accomplish. This in turn will encourage more giving. You can’t really ask for more. That’s why I am voting for GenPro!

Girl Talk. GT has already had a successful pilot phase in the Baltimore area with both teachers and students responding powerfully. I am really impressed with the planning that the founder has done so far and the future vision combining both literacy and empowerment and helping young women become leaders in their own communities.

Girl Talk all the way. As a young Black female struggling school district turned teacher school board member and social change advocate I think Girl Talk has all the makings of a replicable sustainable and transformative organization. Girl talk fuses the arts of mentoring discussion mediation and bonding with literacy critical thinking and social networking. I think students particualry urban students need these skills and proficiences and Girl Talk’s model that can get it to them.

Girl Talk is a wonderful program to reach at-risk middle school-aged students. It helps them to sort through the maze of issues that interfere with preparation for a good wholesome productive adult life. It helps them prepare to be positive role models for the next generation.

Girls already read better than boys in that age group. Test prep without more can at most allow underprepared kids to game their way into a school which will be too hard for them once they get there. Funding hs political activism might entertain kids and politicians but it won’t teach them skills that most of them can use in their later lives--political action won’t put food on the table and they can’t all be city council members. It is not an overstatement to say that Mr. Lowe’s work with Tipping Points can change lives. His work helps to broaden educational access for those students who are often marginalized from it. Tipping Points has done outstanding work with students in our program.

It is not an overstatement to say that Tipping Points can change lives. It’s work helps to broaden educational access for those students who are often marginalized from it. Mr. Lowe’s skilled efforts serve to address the achievement gap between the success of students in the suburbs and their less economically advantaged and more educationally underprepared counterparts in Philadelphia. Tipping Points has done outstanding work with students in our program.

my friend is a supporter of the generation project but i thought i would check the ideas out before voting. good job to all these great entrepreneurs. but after thinking about it my vote goes to the generation project after all because i think that letting donors design gifts is the fastest easiest way to get a bunch of new ideasmoney in education. it’s too bad rugby can’t give all the finalists $25k.

My vote is for Girl Talk. As the founder of an adult book club I have seen firsthand the transformation that reading can have in a child’s life. One of our members brought her younger sister 13 at the time to one of our book club meetings because they were going directly to somewhere after the meeting. Her sister had never read a book in her life before was doing poorly in middle school grade wise and seemed to have no motivation to ever want to achieve much of anything. About 1 12 years

Ms. Devlin’s work with Girl Talk in the Dorchester County area will make a tremendous difference in a school district where there are no programs to support young women. Her success and enthusiasm is to be rewarded. And I’m sure taht many other schools could benefit greatly from her program.

What a great idea to build confidence understanding and maturity in young women-thru literature. To work almost individually and in a very personal way with the young women sounds like it will be very satisfying for everyone and successful in reaching their goals. I would like to lend my support to Girl Talk. Study after study shows that students that read excel. Young students that are introduced to reading for pleasure by a friend or mentor become better and more frequent readers. At risk girls in the grades of 6-12 are particulaly vulnerable of falling thru the cracks and failing to find the world of pleasurable reading. Ms. Devlin’s program which ties pleasurable reading to topics that build self esteem is sorely needed. Thanks.

I vote for Girl Talk...like Three Cups of Tea author and founder of schools in Afghanistan Greg Mortenson who focuses on educating the girls this program works hands-on with at-risk girls who are working to succeed in the midst of family illiteracy racial barriers and a culture that tends to downplay their potential. Elizabeth is trying to get to the heart of the challenges and empower girls and change attitudes one girl at a time. Go Elizabeth!

I have been following the development of Girl Talk from it’s infancy. Ms. Devlin has had measurable results while continuing to engage feedback from participants educators community leaders and child advocates. Each time she has improved expanded and successfully launched in new school districts. If selected this grant will help take the curriculum to a broader audience.

GIRLTALK is my choice. I mentor 2 6th grade at risk girls. I find some of the biggest issue are getting them exposed to extra curricular activities getting them to read beyond what is expected and giving them a context to discuss the issues they are faced with. They are faced with so many issues working at 13 helping raise younger siblings living in overcrowded istuations and to have a focused opportunity to read and discuss in a facilitated way would be great!

I have heard back from parents who have said that their daughter didn’t realize that women did so many things. One of the girls in the groupp came to me and said I think I can go to college. I never thought it was for me but I really want to go. Girls at risk need as much support as we can give them to help them achieve.

My vote is for Girl Talk! Education is the foundation for progress. I met a little girl daughter of single mom who spent most of her time reading which had become a passion for her. One day at age 13 she was one of the few selected for a NASA Summer Program. I’m not suggesting that every girl in the club will go to NASA but the club will be a channel for developing in the girls a habit to read which overtime will transform in better education knowledge success and progress for them

All the projects are all great. Thank you to Ralph Lauren Ruby for doing this competition and giving each of the projects the opportunity to get some buzz. My personal choice Tipping Point. Why? It is straightforward. It is meeting a clear and specific need – a critical need. Justice issues are important to me I think this links into that. It is well-thought out. There is a methodology goals means to sustain itself.

Tipping Point is where is at! I worked in Philly for 3 years on a community development project where there was a lot of focus on education. The questions always came down to – how you we break through break out –open new options given the available resources. I am so grateful that someone came up with the idea behind Tipping Point. I know for a fact that it is an unduplicated service. Even better by design or not it is a natural partner for many organizations.

Transform America. America is in dire need of people who are interested in public policy and service who are willing to work on the difficult political and societal problems that we as a country face. The best place to start that process is with the youth of today so we have true leaders tomorrow.
