With the upcoming music storm of CMJ just a few weeks away, we’re brushing up on our indie bands, and one discovery has us especially psyched. Don’t laugh: it’s a coloring book.
The Indie Rock Coloring Book is the masterpiece of illustrator Andy J. Miller, whose tripped-out style harkens back to the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine. He’s got a modern hook, though — whimsical caricatures that hone in on each rocker’s quirkiest trait. We got a strange kick out of filling in MGMT’s psychedelic playground; Bon Iver’s lonely cabin in the woods (complete with enchanted water supply) and Devandra Banhart’s absurdly overgrown beard.
Each of these drawings is inspired by indie bands associated with the Yellow Bird Project, a Montreal-based nonprofit that is donating all of the book’s royalties to music charities.
All very cool. The only question, of course, is whether it spoils your indie cred to be caught scribbling away in a spill of Crayons.
