RUGBY CULTURE: Take Ivy, Take Two
Culture
The good news: the much-drooled-over reissue of Take Ivy comes out today. The bad news: unless you were one of the Ivy fanatics who pre-ordered months ago, you’re still not getting a copy. The cult following for Japanese photographer T. Hayashida’s 1965 opus on American Ivy League style reached a frothing frenzy when Powerhouse Books announced last year they would be republishing the highly sought-after volume. The first printing of 16,000 books has been sold out for weeks now, but there’s a glimmer of hope. A second printing is in the works and due into the warehouse in about three weeks. Though it’s already half spoken for, that means the other half is still up for grabs, so we suggest you pre-order now. In the meantime, we’ve got scans after the jump to keep you sated.

RUGBY CULTURE: Lewis Hine
Culture
One of our favorite photographers, Lewis Hine made a name for himself documenting Americans at work during the decades between the wars. His iconic images of the Empire State Building’s construction especially hit that fine line between art and photojournalism: the workmen’s expressions and clothes capture the toughness of the Greatest Generation, while the stunning geometry in the composition and moody contrast of dark silhouette against foggy New York skyline elevate the image to fine art territory. See what can happen if you’re willing to swing from a basket 1,000 feet above Fifth Avenue? You can view the photo above at the Queens Museum of Art as part of the exhibition Working Stiffs, along with 49 other work-related images curated from their excellent permanent collection.

RUGBY CULTURE: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Culture
Michael Cera slouches back on to the big screen this week in Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, and believe or not, he’s shtick is actually still really funny. As a love-sick, aspiring-rockstar slacker named Scott Pilgrim, Cera must battle the seven “evil exes” of his dream girl in order to win her heart. Based on Bryan Lee O’Mallery’s graphic novels (image above), the movie mixes Cera’s wry hero-nerd with special effects straight from video games. Don’t worry, this is a good thing. Not into Nintendo? The much-hyped soundtrack is worth checking out, as the likes of Beck and Broken Social Scene dropped original tracks for the film. Take out those headphones, forget about your work for a second, and stream it here, and follow us on Twitter @RugbyRL for a chance to win a copy.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT: The Radiant Child

There have already been a handful of movies made about ‘80s street artist turned art-world darling Jean-Michel Basquiat, but the total rawness of filmmaker Tamra Davis’s footage makes her take on the enormously talented painter, The Radiant Child, unforgettable.

RUGBY CULTURE: Bruce Davidson’s OUTSIDE INSIDE
Culture
As the temperatures in New York edge above 90 today and the humidity nears jungle-level swampiness, we can’t help but be jealous of the windblown girl in this excellent Bruce Davidson image.
