OXFORD(CLOTH) BLUES: The Re-release of “Kind of Blue”
Music
If anyone knew how to write his own rules, it was Miles Davis. The jazz legend busted through just about every known barrier in music, inventing formats that would influence sound for generations. This year is the 50th anniversary of Kind of Blue, the seminal album that exploded modal jazz (solo improvisations over repeated chords), and the digitally remastered collector’s edition comes out today from Sony BMG. If you want to get into the genre, but are a little intimidated, download the record and you’ll be head of the class.
Miles’s influence didn’t stop at music, though — he was also a fashion icon, subverting traditional Ivy League style to achieve a super polished, but definitely rakish, elan. Andre 3000 and Kanye got nothin’ on Davis’s buttoned-up twist.

POST BILLS: The First Chicago International Poster Biennial
Culture
From Toulouse Lautrec’s iconic placards to that ubiquitous Bob-Marley-blunt-smoking pinup, the poster has made it’s mark on culture. But until now, it has never been properly feted in this country. Remedying that oversight is the first-ever Chicago International Poster Biennial, opening today and on view at the Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Chicago's Grant Park. This domestic exhibition expands on themes initiated by international precursors in Warsaw, Helsinki, China and Mexico by returning the utilitarian art form to its natural environment—outdoors and in public view. Recruiting an impressive coterie of print luminaries for their jury, co-founders Lance Rutter and Yann Legendre solicited over 1,600 submissions from artists all over the world. Posters that made the final cut will be on display at the Bicentennial Plaza through October 29. Check out a slideshow of the winners along with some of our favorite runners up after the jump, and let us know what wall décor you’re most proud (or, even better, ashamed) of in the comments.

RUGBY CONCERT SERIES: The Postelles
Music
This Friday’s in-store show features The Postelles, whom we’ve been following all summer. Friends since high school, John, Daniel, Billy and David went on to flirt with college (Harvard, The New School, Skidmore and BU, respectively) before deciding to postpone their studies and make The Postelles a full-time job. To celebrate David’s 20th birthday yesterday, this magnetic Motown-inspired rock band detoured over to Rugby for an afternoon of shopping before getting their groove on. Check out what they had to say and an embed of their new single "1, 2, 3 Stop" after the jump.
